Sometimes carrying “something” is better than carrying nothing…

Not everyone feels comfortable carrying a compact or subcompact handgun, let alone a full size one, and sometimes the way we dress or where we are located prevents doing so.

Here are some of my “unique” carry options that allow me to carry in different ways as the situation dictates.

I had the opportunity to enjoy a great day at the range yesterday shooting some video of 10 new full auto firearms we recently added for our YouTube channel. Select-fire genesisarms GEN12 shotgun with the new Gen 2 rexsilentium SEG12 suppressor, a HK23E beltfed machine gun, and a suppressed AR57 are just a few that we did. One of the guns that I was able to enjoy was this incredible factory MP7a2 provided by my friends at thehubaz that just happens to be one of a very select few in RAL8000 here in the US.

Every firearm I make video content of has been a firearm owned by Legacy Arms, with two exceptions… the SIG SPEAR and this MP7, both of which came from The Hub AZ. There are plenty of crappy people in this world so it makes knowing the good ones so much more valuable and enjoyable. As my second Army Astronaut classmate heads into space today I thought I would share something else that is ”out of this world” with you… this new 1911 made of hand-forged and hand-crafted Damascus steel made by cabotguns

Cabot Guns is known for its “one-of-a-kind” creations having made a set of 1911s out of meteorite in the past… and they have recently turned to creating some of the most beautiful firearms in the world using unique variants of Damascus steel. They just released another pair of one-of-a-kind guns named Aphrodite and Leviathan that you need to take a look at.

I collect 1911s because of their history and the capability that the platform lends itself to for creativity and customization while often being unsurpassed in accuracy. Everyone has been posting pictures of their new springfieldarmoryinc Prodigy pistol since it’s release a few weeks ago and I was starting to feel left out! So, without further adieu, I too have a Prodigy and am showcasing it in all of its glory!

In all seriousness, I am looking forward to spending some time with this new firearm and seeing how it stacks up to some of the 2011 and Staccato guns that I have. This is the 5” version and it also comes in a 4.25” version. I have had it for about 2.5 weeks so far and haven’t had a chance to take it to the range yet but will do so in the next few days.

My personal feeling so far is that it is a gun built commensurate with its price point. What I mean by that is that it is a great gun but there are some noticeable benefits to similar guns that are double and triple the cost of this one and that is to be expected. Time = money and some of the more refined fit and finish attributes seen on more boutique guns come at a cost that can’t easily be replicated for less. I feel like i buy these guns with pretty realistic expectations and so things like this don’t both me. I am looking forward to seeing what line of precision and accuracy it is capable of, as well as its reliability. Magazines have always been an issue with some of these 2011-style guns in the past and SA has opted to make their own proprietary magazine for it while still allowing STI mags to work in the gun.

The Browning Hi-Power is one of my favorite firearms to shoot. There is no doubt that technology and innovation continue to improve, and as the world of pistols continues to adapt, I am constantly amazed by that fact that a firearm made 87 years ago continues to be prevalent today. Not many things in our world have remained fundamentally unchanged for as long.

Last year, Fabrique Nationale made the decision to reinvent, and reintroduce the Hi-Power pistol. Not many of them have been seen in the wild but I was able to finally add this new FN High Power to my collection. I am excited to spend some quality time with it on the range to see how it lives up to its Browning and FN predecessors, as well as the numerous clones now being made worldwide.

I have been an avid collector of HPs for years, and feel incredibly fortunate to own some made by the finest pistol smiths in the world… Ted Yost, Wayne Novak, Terry Tussey, nighthawkcustom, cylinderslide, Mk3, and hipowerprincess and enloecustoms from their time at Robar. I feel confident in my ability to discern quality vs “a good attempt” and think that this new FN is going to be a good quality production gun that does what it needs to do, and lends itself to becoming a new platform by which to create world class pistols in the hands of some of the most capable artisans.

fnh_usa President states that this new firearm “pays homage to the prolific design, while modernizing the ergonomics, functionality, and operation”. The trigger has been refined, the magazines have been greatly improved upon, and the sights and controls now have some ability to be modified and tailored to the user.

Twenty one years ago today, the world as we knew it changed drastically. The entire world joined together and struggled through the emotions of fear, sadness, anger, pain, and pride as we came together as a nation, and as a global community, to help one another rebuild not only our infrastructure, but our hearts as well. We believed that good would triumph over evil, and strength would provide light within the darkness.

For those of us in uniform at the time, it marked a change in our lives as we transitioned from a country at peace and prepared for war. We were scared and uncertain as to what the future held, but resilient and unyielding as each of us stood up and prepared to defend our nation, our values, and our ideals to the best of our abilities. Over the years, we have seen incredible men and women display strength, valor, compassion, humility and restraint as they put their lives in harms way on our behalf. I will forever wish that the events on this day had never occurred, but will also be forever humbled and honored to have served alongside some of the finest people that our country has ever known.

Today I reflect back on those lost in the initial attack, and the friends that have paid the ultimate sacrifice, not for politics, but for a belief in the ideals that we hold true, and for the love that they had for the men and women beside them. I will never forget this day, or the ones who stood up and said “here I am, send me”.

sigsauerinc continues to create new and innovative firearms that meet the needs of so many different users, from civilian enthusiast to the law enforcement and military communities as well. The introduction of the P365 in 2018 took the world by storm with the creation of a small, yet robust and functional carry pistol. Over the years new models have been added to include the P365 on the bottom with a frame mounted safety, the P365XL shown in the middle with a threaded barrel and gsltechnology Pillbox suppressor, and the new P365 X-Macro that was just released a few weeks ago on the top.

I have to say that I have been incredibly impressed with the P365 X-Macro. The grip fits my hand better, giving me a better purchase on the firearm for increased accuracy and recoil management. The 17+1 capability adds much to the firearm itself without decreasing its capability as an everyday carry pistol. When I carry, I typically prefer a 1911, but there are times when I value the small size and concealability of this platform, and that makes the P365 series my "go-to" gun for basic EDC needs, and I always have one on me or somewhere nearby.

Despite being a FFL/SOT, I regularly shop at some of my local gun stores to help support my local businesses, see some interesting firearms that they bring in that I don`t always have access to, and maintain the amazing community we have here in Arizona. Today I wanted to share another firearm that I recently added to my collection that most people have probable never seen... an Italian-made Beretta 92S, one of the first thousand made in 1978.

The first variant of the 92 series Beretta, the 92, began production in Italy in 1976. Originally, 7,000 units were made of this first firearm from 1976-77 featuring a frame mounted safety and a "step down" slide. From 1977-1983, the 92 featured a straight, flat faced slide to make machining easier. In 1978, at the request of various Italian law enforcement agencies, Beretta added a slide-mounted decoker/ safety which replaced the frame mounted safety and mimicked the functionality of the Walther P38 commonly seen in Europe at the time. The magazine release remained on the base of the frame which was common throughout Europe. This model became known as the 92S.

The version seen here is one of the first 1000 units made in 1978. This initial batch used frames from the production 92 with the frame safety being plugged as seen here. From late 1978-1982 the frames were made without the safety hole. The 92S was made alongside production of the 92. In 1982, the 92S was discontinued and the 92SB was added which included a firing pin block and updated safety lever and the relocation of the magazine release higher one the frame near the trigger guard, where it remains today. In 1983, production of the original 92 ceased, and the 92SB was officially entered into the US Government trials designated as the 92SB-F. Upon selection, the new Beretta, designated the 92FS went into production in 1984, and was officially issued to the US Military beginning in 1985 as the M9, the government version of the civilian 92FS counterpart.

This Beretta 92S with the frame safety plug is a really cool piece of European history and part of the evolution of the iconic firearm we all know today. A tale of two Hudson’s…

The Hudson H9 striker fired pistol was first released at the 2017 SHOT show and created quite the buzz with its 1911-style ergonomics and low bore axis engineering it had the potential to be everything people needed and more. This is another one of those guns that had so much potential but the manufacturer stopped just short of getting it “right” and ultimately went out of business two short years later.

The black H9 shown here is a stock gun in new and unfired condition. The FDE one is one that I decided to build up and make into a shooter. The gun features a rare, factory threaded barrel, and the slide was milled for the Holosun optic by enhancedsystems here in Peoria, AZ. The FDE Cerakote was done by roninarms in Payson, AZ. Christina, the founder of Deathstalker Industries, started the company with her husband to provide an EDC tool that allows men, women, kids, grandparents… everyone… to maintain at least a small level of protection on their body at all times. Made from the shell of an ink-based marker, and lovingly called an “Ouchie”, the ink cartridge is removed and replaced with a handmade and sharpened G10 insert. Remove the cap and you are ready for business. Meet the newest member of my nighthawkcustom family... this stunning korth_arms ALX revolver in .357 Magnum.

For those that have followed my journey, I am a longtime Nighthawk Custom collector, and less than a month ago added my first Korth revolver to the collection... a limited edition STX Silver. After a day at the range with this incredible competition oriented firearm, I then added a Korth NXR in .44 Mag. This ALX arrived two days ago and makes Korth #3 for the month. The ALX is essentially the same gun as the STX but with an aluminum frame instead of stainless steel, and it features these stunning blue accents that make it truly stand out.

This past month has shown me what a truly handmade revolver is all about and I am now a lifelong Korth convert. I can`t wait to take this one to the range and see how its stands up to the others.

Yesterday I posted about the korth_arms NXR revolver that I bought from my local gun store, thehubaz in Phoenix. Today I am posting about the second gun I bought that day, a stunningly beautiful 1911 made by cabotguns and aptly named "The Icon".

For those unfamiliar with Cabot 1911s, they truly are at the pinnacle of the 1911 world with a perfect melding of art and functionality. Cabot produces a few spec models, but where they really shine is the one-of-a-kind firearms that are dreamed up by the builders at Cabot or the receiving clients themselves, with a belief that nothing is impossible.

The Icon, shown here, is a elegant gun in its simplicity. It is made from one solid billet of stainless steel... every single piece and part. The result is this simple, yet eye catching design that pays tribute to the legacy and history of the 1911 perfectly while also showcasing some of the modern techniques used in creating something so unique.

I own a few Cabot`s and one of the things that always catches me off guard is the fit of each of the parts... perfect fit and lock up, yet every moving part moves as if it is on a bed of air, seemingly without the slightest bit of friction...and they can shoot far beyond the capabilities of mere mortals.
